My father was a child of the depression. He never forgot what it was like to be without and wanted to make sure that his family would never know that experience.
Unfortunately, he was not a particularly generous man for this reason. If he knew that I had given away some of his money in creating a memorial foundation in his name, he’d kill me! Upon the death of my mother and uncle I created a fund named in their memory. My parents and uncle may not have been very financially generous, and may not have thought about a permanent legacy, but I think they would be glad that their names will be remembered in terms of mitzvot.
They were all committed to Israel, the Jewish people, and Jewish traditions. As a rabbi and Jewish communal professional, I am glad to have their names associated with good for our community and for our people. My name will be added to this fund at my passing. It’s my hope that future generations will know we cared enough about the future of our people to be a part of it.
