To be a Jew is to understand that one is a part of something bigger and stronger than one’s own individual existence. Indeed, the future of the Jewish people is dependent on strong unified communities. Such unity does not demand conformity; rather, it embraces differences, and seeks to harmonize diverse approaches. As such, unity is a transformational force rendering the community sacred. A single, isolated Jew is a mere letter in the alphabet of the eternally evolving story of our people. However, as a member of a unified community, the Jewish individual becomes an heir to Jewish history, and a participant in Jewish destiny.
It is thus our privilege, nay, our duty to reclaim the ancient metaphor of the Book of Life and to infuse it with personal meaning, as our solemn promise to the Phoenix Jewish community helps ensure its future life.
